Safety briefing

Weather is the dominant concern along this stretch of the Lewis & Clark National Historic Trail in Douglas County, Nebraska. Hail and thunderstorm winds together account for 34 recorded events in the data, and the corridor has also logged 6 flash flood incidents alongside 2 confirmed tornadoes — a combination that makes fast-moving Great Plains storms the clearest threat to campers in the area.

When severe weather rolls in, get off exposed riverbanks and low-lying paths immediately, since flash floods can rise with little warning along the Missouri River corridor. Keep a NOAA weather radio or a phone app with tone alerts running at your campsite so you catch tornado and flash-flood warnings before conditions deteriorate. Store gear in hard-sided vehicles rather than tents when hail is forecast, and identify the nearest sturdy structure or designated shelter before you set up camp.
