The clearest risk at Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site comes from the surrounding community's crime rate, which stood at 404.7 violent incidents per 100,000 residents in 2023 — roughly three times the national average. While the site itself is a day-use historic campus rather than a backcountry destination, that county-level figure means visitors should stay alert, particularly in parking areas and when traveling nearby roads after dark.
Keep valuables completely out of sight in your vehicle — a visible bag or device is enough to invite a break-in. Plan your visit during daylight hours and park in well-trafficked, visible spots near the visitor center. Weather is a secondary concern: Macon County has logged four tornadoes on record, so download a NOAA weather app before arrival and identify the visitor center or a sturdy interior building as your quick shelter if a storm develops during your tour.
