Safety briefing

The clearest risk for visitors to this South Carolina historic trail corridor is the surrounding community's violent crime rate — 478.1 incidents per 100,000 residents in York County in 2023, one of the more elevated figures among trail-adjacent areas in the region. Because much of Overmountain Victory is a corridor trail passing through towns and roadside access points rather than a remote backcountry setting, that county-level crime context is directly relevant to how and where you park, camp, and move through the area.

Choose established, well-lit trailhead parking and avoid leaving valuables visible in your vehicle at any access point. If you're car-camping near the corridor, a dash cam with motion detection adds a practical layer of deterrence overnight. Weather-wise, six thunderstorm wind events and four flash flood incidents on record mean you should check radar before any creek-adjacent sections and keep a weather radio in your kit rather than relying on cell service alone.
