Safety briefing

The clearest risk at Kings Mountain National Military Park isn't weather — it's the surrounding community's crime rate. York County logged a violent crime rate of 478.1 per 100,000 residents in 2023, which runs well above national averages and warrants real attention for families parking overnight or leaving gear unattended.

Keep valuables out of sight in your vehicle — better yet, lock them in a hard-sided container or take them into your tent. Arrive and settle in before dark, since the park's wooded trailhead lots have limited lighting and can feel isolated at night. If you're using an RV, position it where you have sightlines to neighboring sites and keep exterior storage bays locked; a simple hitch lock adds a visible deterrent that most opportunistic thieves will skip past.
