Safety briefing

Thunderstorm wind is the standout hazard at Bighorn Canyon, with 10 recorded events driving the area's weather risk profile. These sudden gusts can hit exposed canyon rims and open reservoir stretches with little warning, making timing and positioning critical for anyone camping or out on the water. The surrounding Big Horn County also carries a violent crime rate of 449 per 100,000 residents — well above the national average — so site selection and situational awareness matter off the trail too.

When thunderstorms are forecast, move your tent or RV away from canyon edges and tall, isolated trees before winds arrive — not after the sky darkens. Bring heavy-duty tent stakes and guylines rated for high-wind conditions, since standard kit stakes pull out easily in gusty, rocky soil. For campsite security, keep valuables locked in your vehicle rather than visible in an open tow vehicle bed or picnic area, especially at lower-traffic sites near the Montana entrance.
