Safety briefing

The dominant safety concern at Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace isn't a weather hazard — it's the surrounding urban environment. Located in Manhattan, this site sits within New York County, where the violent crime rate reached 400.6 per 100,000 residents in 2023, making street safety a more pressing consideration than any recorded natural hazard. The site logged just one weather incident — a single lightning event — with no fatalities and one injury.

Families visiting this urban historic site should treat it like any dense city destination: keep bags zipped and worn across the body rather than slung over one shoulder, avoid displaying expensive cameras or phones openly on the sidewalk, and stay aware of your group's location relative to building entrances and crosswalks. Plan your arrival and departure routes in advance using a downloaded offline map so you're not visibly navigating on your phone while stopped on a busy Midtown street.

About Theodore Roosevelt Birthplace National Historic Site

This is the boyhood home of the first U.S. president to be born in New York City. Raised in a townhouse at 28 E. 20th St., Theodore Roosevelt would grow up to be our 26th President and become immortalized on Mount Rushmore. However, he started life as a sickly yet bright boy who exercised to improve his health and began a lifelong passion for the "strenuous life."
