Safety briefing

Thunderstorm wind is the standout hazard at Saint-Gaudens National Historical Park, with 8 recorded events logged for Sullivan County — making it by far the most likely weather disruption you'll encounter on a visit. These storms can arrive quickly across the Connecticut River valley, and the park's open lawns and mature trees create real exposure to falling limbs and sudden gusts.

When thunderstorms are in the forecast, keep a weather radio app like NOAA Weather Radio active on your phone and identify a hard-sided vehicle or the park's brick visitor center as your go-to shelter before you arrive. Avoid setting up camp chairs or picnic blankets beneath the large trees that line the sculpture gardens during unstable afternoon conditions. If you hear thunder, treat the 30-minute rule seriously — stay sheltered until 30 minutes after the last rumble before returning to open areas.
