Morgan County's violent crime rate of 646 per 100,000 residents is the sharpest risk signal in this data — well above national averages — and it's the factor families should weigh most seriously when planning a trip to Obed Wild & Scenic River. The park's river corridors and remote put-in points can leave visitors isolated, and that isolation cuts both ways when personal safety is concerned. Thunderstorm wind events (4 recorded) and a flash flood round out the hazard picture but have caused no recorded injuries here.
Park in designated, well-lit lots rather than pull-offs on county roads, and avoid leaving valuables visible inside vehicles — break-ins tend to follow opportunity. If you're paddling or hiking deep into the gorge, share your float plan with someone outside the park and carry a charged personal locator beacon, since cell coverage drops out quickly along the river corridor. Plan to be off the water before afternoon storms build; the thunderstorm wind history here makes late-day paddling a gamble.

About Obed Wild & Scenic River
The Obed Wild and Scenic River looks much the same today as it did when the first white settlers strolled its banks in the late 1700s. While meagerly populated due to poor farming soil, the river was a hospitable fishing and hunting area for trappers and pioneers. Today, the Obed stretches along the Cumberland Plateau and offers visitors a variety of outdoor recreational opportunities.
Weather
The weather along the Cumberland Plateau can be best described as unpredictable. Each season brings its own weather patterns. Summers are generally hot and humid, with high temperatures sometimes eclipsing 90 degrees. The low temperatures in winter often dip below freezing. Spring sees the most amount of precipitation, but rainfall can occur in various amounts throughout the year.
