The most pressing concern at Hubbell Trading Post isn't weather — it's the surrounding area's violent crime rate of 428.9 incidents per 100,000 residents recorded in 2023, one of the more elevated figures you'll encounter at a national historic site. Apache County's numbers reflect a rural region where law enforcement response times can be lengthy, meaning visitors shouldn't assume the historic setting insulates them from real-world risk. Flash flooding rounds out the hazard picture, with 5 recorded flash flood events adding a secondary threat during monsoon season.
Keep valuables locked out of sight in your vehicle and avoid lingering in parking areas after dark, particularly if you're in an RV or tow vehicle that signals overnight presence. For flooding, download the NWS alerts app and identify the nearest high-ground route before your visit, since canyon roads near Ganado can become impassable within minutes of an upstream storm you never see coming.
