Safety briefing

Severe thunderstorms are the standout hazard at Fort Pulaski, with Chatham County logging 21 thunderstorm wind events alongside 4 lightning strikes and 4 flash flood incidents in recent recorded data. The monument sits on low-lying coastal Georgia terrain, which funnels storm cells quickly and leaves little time to react once conditions deteriorate. Flash flooding in particular can cut off access roads and low areas with minimal warning.

Before heading out, download a weather app that pushes NOAA severe thunderstorm alerts directly to your phone, and check tide and flood forecasts specific to the Savannah coastal zone — not just a general weather app. Pack a waterproof dry bag for electronics and documents in case a flash flood compromises your vehicle or campsite. If you hear thunder, move immediately to a hard-topped vehicle rather than the open fortification grounds, which offer no meaningful lightning protection.

About Fort Pulaski National Monument

For much of the 19th century, masonry fortifications were the United States’ main defense against overseas enemies. However, during the Civil War, new technology proved its superiority over these forts. Using rifled cannons, the U.S. Army compelled the Confederate garrison inside Fort Pulaski to surrender. The siege was a landmark experiment in the history of military science and invention.
