Safety briefing

Thunderstorm wind is the clearest hazard at Fort Necessity, with 33 recorded events in Fayette County driving the majority of the area's weather risk. These storms can arrive quickly in the southwestern Pennsylvania highlands, snapping branches and turning loose gear into projectiles with little warning. The county's flash flood and tornado records—4 and 2 events respectively—add a secondary layer of concern for anyone camping near low-lying ground.

Before you set up camp, check the hourly forecast through the NWS Pittsburgh office and identify the nearest hard-sided shelter on the battlefield grounds. Stake your tent with heavy-duty ground anchors rather than the lightweight stakes that come in most kits, and store camp chairs, coolers, and tarps inside your vehicle when storms are forecast overnight. If thunder is audible, move away from the open meadow around the fort's reconstructed stockade, as that exposed terrain offers no protection from lightning or straight-line winds.
