Safety briefing

Violent crime in Sandoval County is the sharpest concern for visitors to Bandelier National Monument, with the county recording 795.2 violent incidents per 100,000 residents in 2023 — a rate roughly double the national average. While the monument itself draws a quieter crowd, that county-level number signals real risk in the surrounding area, particularly at trailhead parking lots and roadside stops where vehicle break-ins and opportunistic theft tend to cluster.

When you arrive, transfer valuables from your car into your tent or RV before heading out on trails — a visible bag on a seat is an invitation. Park in staffed or well-trafficked lots near the visitor center rather than remote pullouts, especially at dusk. The data also logged four thunderstorm wind events and one flash flood, so keep a weather radio or app alert active: canyon terrain at Bandelier funnels storms fast, and wet slot-canyon trails turn dangerous with little warning.

About Bandelier National Monument

Bandelier National Monument protects over 33,000 acres of ruggedly beautiful canyon and mesa country. Petroglyphs, dwellings carved into the soft rock cliffs, and standing masonry walls pay tribute to the early days of a culture that still survives in the surrounding communities.

Weather

Spring daytime temperatures in the 70's can be followed by a snow storm with wet heavy snow and daytime temperatures in the 40's. Summers are dry with June usually being the hottest month of the year. Days in July, August and September often end with thunderstorms that can drop heavy localized rain and are often accompanied by lightning. Autumn weather is usually sunny with blue skies and warm (but not hot) days and cool nights. Winter average snowfall 25". Snow and ice can close trails and roads.
